Preliminary Study on a Feasible Solution for Environmental Sustainability in Rural Areas
This study examines a sustainable approach to rural environmental conservation through aquaponics and solar energy. Initiated by China Medical University Hospital (CMUH) in 2016, the project aims to enhance food security and renewable energy use. A 75 m2 aquaponic system, funded with $10,000, was installed in 2021, producing 68 kg of vegetables and 96 kg of fish by 2023, sustaining 10 vulnerable families. A solar photovoltaic system introduced in 2024 generates 12,000 kWh annually, creating 12 renewable energy certificates. These initiatives reduce carbon emissions and provide economic benefits, aligning with the UN’s 2030 Sustainable Development Goals. Future efforts will focus on regulatory support and long-term sustainability.
