Analysis of LoS MIMO Channel for the D-Band

Nowadays, wireless communication systems employ multiple antennas to increase the channel capacity for high data rates demanded by new emerging applications such as virtual reality (VR), augmented reality (AR), high dynamic range video streaming (HDR), machine-to-machine (M2M), cloud computing, etc. Along with multiple antennas, operating in the D-Band frequency range can allow the large modulation bandwidth required to achieve high data rates. In this context, this work investigates multiple antenna wireless communications in line-of-sight scenarios for D-band frequencies. We outline line-of-sight (LoS) multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) communication in a 2-D setup and analyze the LoS MIMO channel in terms of positional impairments of the receiver antenna array and the different orientations of the transmitter antenna array. Furthermore, the impact of different dependent parameters such as antenna element spacing, link range, carrier wavelength, and number of antennas on the conditioning of the LoS MIMO channel is investigated. From the numerical analysis, we conclude that even within a range of different antenna array tilts at the transmitter and positional displacements of antenna array at the receiver, multiple optimal antenna spacings can be identified that lead to a near-orthogonal LoS MIMO channel.
