A Portable, High-performance Transient Electromagnetic System for Rapid Subsurface Mapping
Summary We present a lightweight and ultra-portable transient electromagnetic (TEM) system designed for rapid and efficient subsurface mapping. Capable of investigating depths up to 70 meters, TEM2Go enables profiling up to 1 km in 10–15 minutes, making it ideal for engineering applications such as road construction, shallow groundwater amping, and managed aquifer recharge. The system operates with a compact 0.66 × 0.66 m2 coil design carried by a two-person crew, one managing the transmitter and the other the receiver. Built on the SuperTEM platform, TEM2Go features bias-free measurements starting at 4.5 microseconds with a high bandwidth exceeding 700 kHz, supported by tapered gating and ultra-fast repetition rates. The system delivers high-quality data with minimal internal noise and no drift, providing a faster, more practical alternative to methods like Electrical Resistivity Tomography (ERT) and Vertical Electrical Sounding (VES) for large-area surveys. Field operations and real-time neural network processing enhance data acquisition efficiency, while post-survey standard software ensures robust interpretation. TEM2Go’s portability and advanced capabilities make it an excellent choice for imaging shallow subsurface targets and overcoming limitations of traditional geophysical methods.
