Whole-book reading instruction involves teachers guiding students through an in-depth and multidimensional reading experience centered on a single book, aiming to enhance students’ core literacy and comprehensive abilities in Chinese language learning. It emphasizes a systematic and holistic understanding of literary works, effectively avoiding the fragmentation and segmentation issues found in traditional reading methods. Rickshaw Boy is one of the mandatory whole-book reading selections specified in the 2022 edition of the Compulsory Education Chinese Curriculum Standards for students in the fourth learning stage (Grades 7~9), offering significant literary and educational value. This paper takes Rickshaw Boy as an example to explore the essential strategies for whole-book reading instruction in junior middle school Chinese classes, providing references and insights for educators to improve the overall quality of Chinese language teaching.
