Does Vitamin D Level Affect the Radiographic Severity of Osteoarthritis Knee and Its Functional Status?
Sir, In their study, Hariprasad et al.[1] found a high prevalence of Vitamin D (VD) deficiency (91.5%) among Indian patients with knee osteoarthritis (KOA). Although no significant correlation between VD deficiency and radiographic severity was demonstrated, VD levels were noticed to affect the functional integrity of the knee.[1] Apart from a few study limitations mentioned by Hariprasad et al.,[1] we assume that the following methodological point is relevant. Despite India is a country near to the equator and getting plentiful sun rays, VD deficiency is a noticeable phenomenon and it forms an important health concern among various age groups. The recently published data pointed to a 65% prevalence of VD deficiency and a 21% prevalence of VD insufficiency among Indian adults.[2] Therefore, we presume that it would be a justifiable option for Hariprasad et al.[1] to conduct a comparative study between the studied cohort and the general population to better understand the correlation between KOA severity and VD levels. Irrespective of the study limitations, the study findings by Hariprasad et al.[1] support the observations of reduced VD levels among Indian KOA patients and the positive VD deficiency association with an accentuated risk of KOA, which are addressed in a recently published systematic review and meta-analysis.[3] Financial support and sponsorship Nil.
