Рыболовство на Чукотке в новейшее время: от традиции к посттрадиции
The author analyzes the development of fishing as a traditional occupation of Chukotka's indigenous peoples and a sphere of the national economic complex in this region. Unlike reindeer herding and marine fishing, state-run fishing developed not on the basis of the traditional economy and skills of the local population but absolutely independently of them. On the contrary, indigenous households are constantly experiencing a powerful technical, technological, organizational, and logistical influence from industrial fishing. Fishing, unlike other traditional spheres (reindeer herding, marine mammal hunting), is a much more individualized occupation. Based on the demanded local resources, fishing allows a more successful fit into modern market relations. We define this model of the traditional economy transformation as post-tradition.
