Notas sobre o controle social das mulheres negras no Brasil e o papel das instituições “totais”
In a country marked by recent slavery and gender inequality, this study seeks to understand to what extent the kitchen and the prison serve as instruments of social control of black women in Brazil. It is argued that, much like the "traditional" total institutions as conceptualized by Goffman (2015), the kitchen also functions as a tool of social control (Garland, 2008) within the socio-economic context of black women. Official data on domestic and incarcerated populations in the country, along with theoretical frameworks, were used as analytical tools, indicating that both the prison and the kitchen affect the non-white bodies of women in a similar manner, perpetuating gender and racial inequalities and vulnerabilities.
