Integrative taxonomic review of the Meganola monofascia van Son species group sensu Hacker et al. (Lepidoptera, Noctuoidea, Nolidae, Nolinae, Nolini)
The taxonomic content of the Meganola monofascia (van Son, 1933) species group sensu Hacker et al. (2012) is revised following an integrative taxonomical approach. Based on diagnostic morphological features of the genital structures and the results of the Maximum Likelihood analyses of 136 DNA barcodes, three species complexes are delimited to include species with a habitus reminiscent of M. monofascia: the M. monofascia, the M. bispermutata Hacker, 2012 and the M. furvitincta Hampson, 1914 species groups. The analyses revealed three new species which are described in this paper: Meganola saotomeana sp. n., Meganola baaka sp. n., and Meganola spherographata sp. n. Nine new synonymies are introduced: Meganola melanosomalis Hacker, 2012 syn. n. is synonymised with Meganola perfusca (Hampson, 1911), Meganola derrae Hacker, 2012, syn. n. and Meganola stigmatolalis Hacker, 2012 syn. n. are synonymised with Meganola bispermutata Hacker, 2012, Meganola chromatographa Hacker, 2012 syn. n. and Meganola kakamega Hacker, 2012 syn. n. are synonymised with Meganola diagrapha Hacker, 2012, Meganola murzinialis Hacker, 2012 syn. n. is synonymised with Meganola pachygrapha Hacker, 2012, Meganola spherographa Hacker, 2012, syn. n. is synonymised with Meganola furvitincta (Hampson, 1914), Meganola parastrigula Hacker, 2012 syn. n. is synonymised with Meganola dicranographa Hacker, 2012, and Meganola taiana László, 2020, syn. n. is synonymised with Meganola canocolorata Hacker, 2012. Meganola dissoluta Hacker, 2012 is reinstated from synonymy with M. monofascia and placed as a subspecies of the latter taxon: Meganola monofascia dissoluta Hacker, 2012 stat. rev., stat. n.; in addition, Meganola cryptochra Hacker, 2012 is downgraded to a subspecies of Meganola bismermutata Hacker, 2012: Meganola bispermermutata cryptochra Hacker, 2012 stat. n. The paper is illustrated with 92 colour figures of adults, 75 black and white images of genitalia and four dendrograms demonstrating the ML tree topology of the entire complex as well as each separate species group.
