EMD-HT Based Fault Detection for Series Capacitor Compensated Line

This paper introduces a novel and efficient fault detection algorithm designed for series capacitor-compensated transmission lines. The approach involves capturing threephase current data at the relay location, which is then processed using Empirical Mode Decomposition (EMD) to extract various Intrinsic Mode Functions (IMFs). Among the IMFs obtained, the one with the highest correlation coefficient is identified as the dominant mode and subjected to the Hilbert Transform to determine the energy index. Fault detection is achieved by analyzing this energy index on the series capacitorcompensated line. The proposed method's effectiveness has been validated on a <tex xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink">$500 \text{kV}, 50 ~\text{Hz}, 300 ~\text{km}$</tex> transmission line with a midpoint series capacitor using MATLAB/Simulink under various fault and non-fault scenarios. Simulation results confirm that the EMD-HT-based algorithm successfully detects faults within half a cycle.
