FPGA Based Power Efficient ECG Heartbeat Detection System For Wearable Devices With Enhanced Noise Filtering

Wearable ECG devices have become increasingly important for real-time heart monitoring, especially when dealing with life-threatening conditions like arrhythmias. The paper deals with the design of an energy-efficient ECG heartbeat detection system for wearable applications. The design was implemented on an FPGA with the use of Discrete Wavelet Transform for high-order noise filtering and approximate pruning techniques for power reduction. MATLAB, Xilinx ISE, and ModelSim simulations are performed to validate the system's capability to detect and classify arrhythmias with high accuracy. The proposed solution has significant reductions in power consumption, processing delay, and resource utilization, making it suitable for compact and portable healthcare monitoring devices.
