Smart Straw for Dilated Cardiomyopathy Patients
Dilated cardiomyopathy is a heart condition where the heart becomes enlarged, and the pumping action of the heart is weakened. Symptoms can include none, to fatigue, swelling of the legs, and shortness of breath. Chest pain or fainting may also occur. Complications may include congestive heart failure, heart valve problems, and heart rhythm problems. An excess volume of fluid will add pressure on the heart causing symptoms and problems to worsen. This new device called the Smart Straw facilitates the formulation of fluid intake for DCM patients. It allows for an easy and effortless way to monitor one’s fluid consumption. The straw is designed in such a way that it can be used without close medical supervision. The straw’s advanced sensors measure the exact amount of liquid taken in ensuring daily requirements are met. The design makes it easy to use because the user does not have to supervise the patient all the time. Portable Smart Straw is a device that is directly integrated with the patients so that they can monitor and regulate how much is being ingested and make the fluid intake status toward the end of an intake detection device. The incorporation of features that direct patients to healthy volume ranges allows Smart Straw to reduce the risk of fluid overload, increase adherence to treatment, and improve the quality of life for patients with DCM.
