Design of Barrel Shift Registers with Enhanced Performance Analysis for Modern Processors
This research article presents the design, simulation, and analysis of barrel shift registers, emphasizing power efficiency and high performance. The barrel shifter architecture, renowned for its ability to perform bit manipulation within a single clock cycle, serves as a critical component in Arithmetic Logic Units (ALUs) of modern processors. In contrast, other sequential shifters, such as serial and parallel shifters, perform data shifting based on the processor’s clock cycles. This alternative requires n-clock cycles to shift n-bits of data, which adversely impacts processor performance. The primary objective of this design is to minimize the number of multiplexers, thereby reducing area complexity while achieving lower power consumption and improved delay performance. The proposed system demonstrates significant enhancements in path delay optimization and energy efficiency, by making it particularly applicable for low power digital communication systems. The design and simulation are conducted using Cadence Virtuoso tool with MOSFET technology across 90 nm, 180 nm technology nodes. Simulation results indicate that the power consumption of the Developed Design is 11.88 percent lower than that of conventional designs, highlighting its superiority in terms of efficiency and performance.
