Design and fabrication of a novel transfemoral prosthetic adaptation for the para-equestrian
ABSTRACT Case Description The patient is a 70-year-old 5′0″ female with a right transfemoral amputation secondary to sarcoma as well an accomplished former equestrian. She was unable to ride her horse with her daily prosthesis due to prosthetic alignment and small stature. Objective The aim of the patient and the authors of this study was to design and fabricate a novel transfemoral prosthetic adaptation for the para-equestrian. Study Design Case report. Treatment The patient was prescribed a custom molded subischial thermoformable foam-padded socket constructed using DacronⓇ straps, elastic straps, and a KeasyⓇ cone. Outcomes This novel prosthetic adaptation enabled the patient to resume riding her horse with maximal comfort and stability and minimal skin breakdown. Conclusions To our knowledge, this report represents the first case in the literature of a custom molded subischial thermoformable foam-padded socket for the para-equestrian. Clinical Relevance This work has improved quality of life for one member of the para-equestrian community and may aid in the development of further rehabilitative technologies. It is applicable to prosthetists, therapists, and physiatrists caring for the para-equestrian patient.
