Enhancing Water Conservation and Crop Yield in Agriculture with Farm Ponds
Farm ponds are essential components in agricultural water management, offering significant benefits for irrigation, crop yield enhancement, and environmental sustainability. This review explores the role of farm ponds in modern agriculture, examining their design, construction, and impact. Farm ponds enhance water availability by capturing and storing runoff, thereby mitigating the effects of erratic rainfall and improving irrigation efficiency. They also contribute to soil conservation, groundwater recharge, and biodiversity support. Despite these advantages, challenges such as technical issues, financial constraints, and regulatory hurdles can impede their effectiveness. Major research gaps include the need for long-term impact studies, soil-water interaction research, and climate adaptation strategies. Innovative practices, such as smart monitoring technologies and eco-friendly design approaches, offer potential solutions to these challenges. The review emphasises the importance of community engagement, training, and supportive policies to ensure successful farm pond implementation and management. By addressing these challenges and leveraging innovative practices, farm ponds can continue to play a crucial role in enhancing agricultural productivity, sustainability, and resilience. This paper provides a comprehensive overview of current practices and future directions, offering valuable insights for stakeholders involved in farm pond projects.
