Waste Wisely: IoT-Powered Smart Bins Redefining Food Waste Management
Food wastage is an extensive environmental issue responsible for economic loss as well as environmental damage and has a generation of over 1.3 billion tonnes of food wastage globally. Poor food wastage management by hostels justifies the call for a new methodology. Utilization of intelligent bins with sensors, cameras, and artificial intelligence enables monitoring and studying food wastage in an innovative manner. By providing insights on food which is being wasted, these smart bins help families, businesses and organizations to manage waste that is being generated, thereby adopting sustainable practices. The smart bin system makes use of IoT technology for maintaining and tracking carbon footprints generated by each individual, the waste generation optimization, and individual accountability through tracking of food waste generated right from the level of students. This method improves operational efficiency, reduces food that is being wasted, and enables a sustainable waste management culture among those who adopt this system.
