From Snap to Evidence: Snapchat Footprint on iOS

Snapchat has transformed how we communicate, especially for Gen Z, by offering a platform where moments disappear as quickly as they are shared. This ephemeral design promises users privacy and freedom from digital permanence. It also raises unique challenges for forensic investigations. In this study, we dive into the hidden layers of Snapchat's iOS application using various forensic techniques and tools. Our discovery challenges Snapchat's claims of complete data deletion. Media files, unsent snaps, and even detailed location data were found lingering in directories long after they were supposedly erased. These findings uncover potential hidden evidence valuable for forensic investigations, and raise serious questions about user privacy and the true nature of “ephemeral” messaging. By exposing the discrepancies between Snapchat's claims and its practices, our research also underscores the need for greater transparency from those social media platforms regarding their user information handling.
