Robust and Optimal Control of Quanser Aero
This paper presents the implementation and comparative study of Model Predictive Control (MPC) and Sliding Mode Control (SMC) on a two degree of freedom testbed, Quanser Aero. Both controllers are used to evaluate precise pitch and yaw control with the aim of minimizing settling time, eliminating steady-state error and reducing chattering effect in the output response. Simulation and hardware results are validated to compare their performance and highlight the trade-offs in real-time applications. The SMC enhanced robustness and reduced chattering, whereas MPC ensured smooth transient response with optimal control. These findings help us with the feasibility of implementing control methods in aerospace and robotics applications.
