A slotted circular patch antenna structure for wireless applications

This work describes the design of an antenna using High Frequency Structure Simulator (HFSS) software. A 70 mm × 85 mm FR4 substrate with a circular radiating patch and microstrip feed was initially designed and simulated. The performance analysis of the designed circular patch antenna for multiband generation is done using the HFSS software. To enhance the performance of the antenna, the size of the ground plane was reduced to generate wideband characteristics. Further optimization involved introducing T shaped slots in the patch structure. It yields additional wideband behavior across three resonated frequency bands with maximum return loss values. The measured frequency bands shall be used in the wireless standards like personal communication services (PCS), worldwide interoperability for microwave access (WiMAX), and X band systems used in daily life communication. This work highlights the effectiveness of design modifications, such as ground plane reduction and slot introduction, in improving return loss.
