Advancements in Avalanche Beacon Technology and Novel Concepts for Miniaturization
Avalanche beacons are essential for finding people trapped beneath snow, but their bulky form factor makes them awkward to transport and operate. The review provides details on the current of the art with respect to beacons and describes two approaches to miniaturizing and simplifying them. One possibility is to put the beacon components into wearable gear like a vest, where they can be balanced better and be more comfortable to wear. Another possibility would be to implement all the necessary functions in a small module, by using System-In-Package (SiP) or System-On-Chip (SoC) microelectronics. These methods can yield gigantic sizes. These approaches can lead to considerable size reduction, but come with the challenges of maintaining robust signals, battery longevity, and durability in adverse weather conditions. Both strategies are combined: wearables integration and compact electronics might offer the best balance between size and reliability. Future developments should focus on flexible materials, better antennas, and smarter power management to create lightweight, practical avalanche beacons that improve rescue speed and survival chances in emergencies.
