Enhancing Trust and Security in Learning Management Systems: Addressing Submission Concerns with Timestamp Transparency and Digital Signatures

Learning Management Systems (LMS) are indis-pensable tools in modern education, enabling streamlined interaction between educators and learners. However, for these systems to be effective, they must be both secure and trustworthy. While often conflated, security and trust represent distinct components. Security pertains to the technical safeguards protecting data integrity and confidentiality, whereas trust involves the users' perception of the system's reliability and fairness. Our experi-ence highlights two recurring concerns among students when submitting assignments via an LMS: (1) ambiguity regarding how submission timestamps are determined, and (2) uncertainty about whether their submission has been successfully received and is tamper-proof. To address the first issue, we propose that LMS platforms prominently display the system's official timestamp to the user at the moment of submission. This measure ensures that students are aware of the time standard governing deadlines and mitigates disputes over late submissions. To resolve the second concern, we introduce a robust digital signature mechanism. Upon submission, the LMS digitally signs the file using cryptographic techniques, generating a verifiable receipt that is securely distributed to both the student and the instructor. This approach provides dual benefits: students gain assurance that their work has been successfully submitted and acknowledged, while instructors can verify the integrity of the submission, ensuring that no modifications occur post-delivery. This dual-layer solution enhances trust in LMS platforms by addressing key user concerns while upholding rigorous security standards. Our framework lays the foundation for further re-search into the intersection of security, trust, and user experience in diaital learning environments.
