An Optimization of Tesla-Type Valve for Mitigating Backflow in Rotary Denotation Engines

Abstract Backflow pressure phenomena pose significant challenges for sensitive aerospace systems. Rotary Denotation Engines (RDEs) experience high-pressure regions immediately behind the denotation front, leading to potential backflow into the inlet or plenum. This backflow can disrupt the intended fuel and air flow, causing instability and reduced performance. Effective mitigation of backflow requires RDE inlets that minimize losses in the forward flow direction while providing high resistance to reverse flow. This work is a continuation of previous work which demonstrated that Tesla-type valves can reduce frequency specific dynamic pressure waves, thereby enhancing engine efficiency and valve lifespan. The previous study showed that when different frequencies are introduced, there is a measured difference in diodicity. This study aims to optimize Tesla-type valve geometries to mitigate the high frequency backflow pressure waves in RDEs. Various Tesla-type valve geometries were analyzed using Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) simulations to assess their diodicity and their effectiveness in mitigating high frequency backflow. The results indicate that specific geometries significantly reduce high frequency dynamic pressure waves, decreasing operational stress and thereby extending the time between maintenance. Optimization of Tesla-type valve geometry can lead to more stable and efficient RDE operation, contributing to the advancement of aerospace propulsion systems. The potential application of this optimized technology is beneficial in critical scenarios requiring immediate high thrust. This research has the potential to benefit other systems such as liquid-fueled rockets, engine assemblies, and aircraft combustors, especially jets, which are sensitive to rapid pressure changes.
