A IMPORTÂNCIA DA SEGURANÇA DO PACIENTE NA PREVENÇÃO DE INFECÇÃO DO TRATO URINÁRIO RELACIONADA AO USO DO CATETER VESICAL DE DEMORA
The focus of this study was to investigate the importance of patient safety in the prevention of catheter-associated urinary tract infections. The objectives were: to analyze the importance of patient safety in preventing urinary tract infection related to the use of indwelling urinary catheters, to identify the main evidence-based preventive measures and strategies to promote adherence to these practices in the context of health care. This is an integrative review study with a qualitative approach. Data collection was performed in the Scientific Electronic Library Online (SCIELO), Latin American and Caribbean Literature in Health Sciences (LILACS), Nursing Database (BDENF) and the Online Medical Literature Search and Analysis System (MEDLINE). The research included articles published in full, in Portuguese, English and Spanish, without time limit. Studies related to care protocols, dissertations and theses were excluded. After applying the eligibility criteria, 12 articles constituted the final sample of the review. Through thematic content analysis, the following analytical categories were developed: Holistic Approach and Patient Safety, Evidence-Based Practices and Bundles, and Nursing Role, Education, and Interventions. These categories reflected the complexity of care required to prevent urinary catheter-related UTI, addressing everything from epidemiological aspects and risk factors to the implementation of bundles and the fundamental role of nurses. The study highlighted the importance of simultaneously adopting multiple preventive measures, such as hand hygiene, aseptic technique during insertion, adequate maintenance of the system, and early removal of the catheter. The application of the results of this study aims to promote more efficient and safe care, highlighting the need for evidence-based practices to reduce the incidence of urinary catheter-associated UTI and its negative impacts on patient health.
