Biofertilizer Commercialization: Future prospects and challenges

An increasing emphasis on sustainable agricultural practices has propelled the interest in biofertilizers as an alternative to conventional chemical fertilizers. This review comprehensively explores the myriad of challenges associated with the commercialization of biofertilizers, examining both environmental and practical obstacles that hinder their widespread adoption. Environmental factors, such as the complex interaction within ecosystems, often lead to inconsistent field performance of biofertilizers despite promising laboratory results. Additionally, the selectivity of microorganisms towards specific crops further complicates the development of universally effective biofertilizers. Practical challenges highlighted in this review include the farmers’ preferences for low particle volume and guaranteed nitrogen content, alongside economic considerations like fluctuating prices of conventional fertilizers and the growing demand for organic food. The regulatory landscape also poses significant barriers, with varying legislation across countries complicating the market entry for biofertilizers. This review highlights the necessity of tailored marketing strategies and robust extension services to educate farmers about the benefits and proper usage of biofertilizers. By delving into case studies and current trends, this paper offers a thorough analysis of the current state of biofertilizer commercialization and provides an insight into potential solutions for enhancing their efficacy and adoption in diverse agricultural contexts.
