Qualitative phytochemical profiling of Thymus vulgaris and Origanum vulgare with implications for phytochemistry and microbial therapeutics
Medicinal plants with along history of ethical and pharmacological applications, primarily attributedto their rich collection of bioactive phytochemicals such as antioxidants andantimicrobial properties, highlighting their potential applications in naturaltherapeutics, food preservation, and infection management. This workcomprehensively summarizes the qualitative phytochemical compositions andantioxidant properties in the context of natural therapeutics, foodpreservation, and infection control. Qualitative analyses on these twomedicinal plants, employing standard chemical screening techniques, toidentify key bioactive compounds such as phenol, flavonoid, tannin, terpenoid, and alkaloids. Thymus vulgaris L. (common thyme) and Origanumvulgare L. (oregano) are prominent Lamiaceae family members. Thefindings revealed that their bioactive constituents offer natural alternativesto synthetic drugs. This research article further discusses current researchgaps and future perspectives necessary for standardizing and optimizing thepharmacological use of these valuable medicinal herbs.
