Performance Optimization of SNR and SFDR in RoF Link for the Next Generation Networks

ABSTRACT A radio frequency over fibre (RFoF) or radio over fibre is a versatile technology, in which light is modulated with radio frequency signal and an optical fibre link is used as a medium to transmit it. Several types of optical fibre and their advantages and disadvantages concerning distance and energy dissipation perspective have been studied. Through this article, we also learning about various types of optical amplifiers to enhance the energy level of the transmitted signal, like doped fibre amplifiers. Several modulators, including the Mach Zehnder modulator (MZM), frequency modulator (FM), phase modulator (PM) and dual drive dual parallel MZM (DD‐DPMZM), were employed to conduct a comparative analysis of the optical power spectrum, in terms of received signal to noise ratio (SNR). The proposed article shows that the measured SNR related to the photo detector current of the used optical modulators: MZM, DD‐DPMZM, FM and PM are 20.11 dB, 17.89 dB, 23.46 dB and25.48 dB respectively, for 2 km optical fibre impairments and 14.22 dB, 10.67 dB, 25.68 dB and 28.16 dB respectively, for 5 km optical fibre impairments. Utilising the Opti system simulation software, to validate the proposed results. Based on simulations and findings, it is found that the phase modulator is better than all other used optical modulators in RoF link to get the associated output SNR for 2 km and 5 km optical fibre impairments. The measured spurious free dynamic range (SFDR) for PM, FM, DD‐MZM and MZM based RoF link are 103 dB.Hz 2/3 , 87 dB.Hz 2/3 , 81 dB.Hz 2/3 and 55 dB.Hz 2/3 respectively.
