Development of Back-Face Coatings for the Characterization of Non-Reflective and Opaque Materials by Laser Shocks

Abstract Introduction Elastomers are widely used in defense industries as ballistic protection. Several authors [1 – 2] have demonstrated that polymers can be integrated into multilayer systems to counter ballistic impacts in the velocity range of 0.2 - 10 km/s. For example, heavy armored vehicles can be equipped with NERAa protection systems: sandwiches of 2 metal sheets and a polymer core (thermoplastic or elastomer). When a shaped charge jet impacts at a velocity of 10 km/s a NERA system, the polymeric material is loaded at high strain rates (107S-1) and high pressures (~ 20 – 30 GPa). It is essential to characterize the dynamic behavior of the elastomer to understand and model the response of these NERA systems during a hypervelocity impact. Material characterization consists of establishing an equation of state (EOS) and a constitutive law (CL) for loadings corresponding to compression shock wave propagation in the medium.
