Digital Image Correlation on an Isentropic Compression Experiment using a High Pulsed Power Driver

Abstract High-pulsed power (HPP) drivers can be used to perform isentropic compression experiments (ICE) on materials in order to study their behavior under a different dynamic loading compared to shock. Photonic Doppler velocimetry (PDV) is used to measure the material velocity under the loading, but the PDV probe allows locating the punctual measurement only on a small area of the material, which can be a problem when studying heterogeneous materials or structural response of larger structures. Digital image correlation (DIC) can help in solving these problems by providing displacement, speed and strain measurements on the full surface of a specimen or a structure by using high-speed cameras and appropriate lightening. DIC has been used to study the structural response of aluminum structures subjected to an isentropic compression on one of its face. Strains have been measured on another face of the structure and have been compared to those obtained with fibber Bragg grating. Another isentropic compression experiment has been performed on a carbon fiber reinforced plastic (CFRP) who displays dissimilar behavior between in-plane and out-of-plane fibber strands. DIC allows the visualization of these differences, and the measurements have been compared to PDV measurements performed on another specimen subjected to the same loading.
