Development of the Light-Gas Gun for Hypervelocity Impact Sterilization Tests, with a Special Focus on a Modeling of Sabot Separation Process
Abstract This study developed a two-stage light-gas gun with a rifle barrel to evaluate the sterilization upon the impact simulating meteorite collisions on the Martian moon. The impact phenomena on the Martian moon were replicated, with the projectile velocities ranging from 1 km/s to 3 km/s. Analytical modeling of the sabot separation process demonstrated good agreement with the experimental data. However, further improvement of the sabot design is required to improve the separation at the velocities below 1000 m/s.
