High-Performance Computational Modeling of Hyper Velocity Impacts Using a Meshless Gamma-SPH Scheme
Abstract The γ-SPH scheme is a recent numerical approach in the field of Hyper Velocity Impact (HVI) simulations. This meshless numerical method overcomes the common instabilities associated with SPH, such as tensile instabilities, through a stabilization technique that maintains conservation and consistency without excessive computational demands. The scheme stabilization is achieved via a nonlinear stability analysis, resulting in CFL-like conditions that ensure the method's robustness and accuracy. Tested across various HVI scenarios, it has proven to significantly enhance stability and accuracy by addressing issues like spurious oscillations in elastic waves and tensile instability. To cater to the demands of large-scale simulations, an High Performance Computing (HPC) version of the γ-SPH scheme has been developed, optimized for parallel processing on multi-CPU or multi-GPU systems. This allows for efficient utilization of modern supercomputers, tackling more complex problems with greater detail. Achieving approximately 92% scaling efficiency, the HPC version can handle billions of particles, demonstrating its capability for industrial applications in defense and space sectors, where timely and precise simulations are crucial. This advancement in HPC implementation marks a significant step in applying SPH methods to solve real-world HVI challenges.
