Laser Simulation of Hypervelocity Impact into Porous Graphite
Abstract Introduction The use of laser-driven shocks is a very interesting alternative to extend the range of impacts accessible by launchers. When a high-power laser is focused on an absorbing target, the first few micrometers of matter vaporizes. The resulting plasma expands violently and pushes against the target surface as shown in Figure 1. By choosing the right laser parameters, the pressure field generated on the target surface can be equivalent to the pressure field that would have been generated by a real projectile.
