Crack Propagation Process by Stress Waves in Pre-Cracked Glass Plate Subjected to Hypervelocity Impact of Debris

Abstract In order to evaluate dynamic crack propagation process by interaction of stress waves, a series of hypervelocity impact tests were carried out. In these tests, two set of high-speed camera and pulsed laser light with polarized optics were utilized. The soda-lime glass plates with 100 μm depth of pre-notch on backside were used as targets. This method allows the simultaneous visualization of crack propagation and branching behavior and the propagation behavior of stress waves represented by birefringence, and revealed time evolution processes of those.
