Safe sedation in endoscopy and the role of the nurse
This article explores the critical role of the endoscopy nurse (EN) in ensuring safe sedation practices in gastrointestinal endoscopy, particularly in light of updated guidelines from the British Society of Gastroenterology ( Sidhu et al, 2024 ). It outlines various sedation methods—conscious sedation, deep sedation and general anaesthesia—highlighting their benefits, risks, and the EN's responsibilities throughout the patient journey. Sedation aims to enhance patient comfort while minimising risks, such as cardiopulmonary complications. ENs play a vital role in monitoring sedation levels, detecting early complications, and providing non-pharmacological support to alleviate anxiety in gastrointestinal endoscopy patients. The article emphasises the importance of patient education, effective communication, and individualised care to ensure a positive procedural experience. Additionally, it discusses the necessity for ENs to be wellversed in sedation protocols, reversal agents and post-procedural care. Ultimately, a comprehensive understanding of sedation practices empowers ENs to advocate for patient safety and comfort during endoscopic procedures.
