A Compact Wideband Metamaterial Absorber for Enhanced Radar and Satellite Communication at Ku and K Bands

Metamaterial absorbers (MAs) are renowned for their exceptional absorption efficiency and compact design. Nonetheless, their narrow operational bandwidth, attributed to their resonance-dependent configuration, poses a significant limitation. This study focuses on broadening the bandwidth of MAs while preserving their compactness and manufacturability. A novel MA structure is introduced, consisting of three successive layers: a copper ground plane, an FR4 dielectric substrate, and a double square element serving as the frequency selective surface (FSS). Simulation results obtained using CST Studio reveal that the proposed MA exhibits wideband absorption, achieving a -10 dB bandwidth (BW) of 14.5 GHz within the frequency range of 12.95 GHz to 27.49 GHz, alongside a Full Width at Half Maximum (FWHM) bandwidth of 17.88 GHz. These results confirm the design’s ability to deliver near-perfect absorptivity at multiple frequencies, substantially improving its broadband absorption capabilities. The proposed configuration demonstrates its potential as an efficient solution for applications necessitating wideband MAs with high absorption performance and simple structural design.
