Deep Reinforcement Learning-Based Precision Irrigation for Ideal Water Use in Arid Areas

Sustainable food production depends on agriculture using water efficiently, especially in arid areas. A revolutionary method for optimizing water distribution based on current environmental circumstances and crop needs is precision irrigation, which makes use of Deep Reinforcement Learning (DRL). This study introduces a unique framework for dynamically monitoring and controlling irrigation systems by combining sophisticated DRL algorithms with Internet of Things-enabled sensors. The suggested approach provides accurate irrigation schedules that adjust to changing conditions by taking into account crop-specific water demands, soil moisture levels, and weather forecasts. Our strategy maximizes agricultural productivity while placing a high priority on resource efficiency. In contrast to conventional irrigation techniques, which frequently lead to water waste and less-than-ideal crop health, the DRL-based system continuously learns and enhances its decision-making process, guaranteeing the best possible water application in a variety of situations. Extensive tests were carried out on controlled agricultural conditions and real-world datasets to validate the framework, showing a notable 25% decrease in water consumption when compared to conventional methods. Furthermore, the technique preserved or improved agricultural production quality, underscoring its usefulness and financial advantages. The integration of heterogeneous data sources, real-time decision-making, and the DRL model's scalability across various agricultural setups are some of the other issues this study tackles. The suggested approach offers a long-term way to lessen the consequences of water scarcity in dry areas by utilizing state-of-the-art machine learning algorithms and strong IoT infrastructures. The results provide important insights into how artificial intelligence is changing agriculture and aid in the wider use of smart farming technologies. In addition to advancing precision irrigation research, this paper opens the door for further advancements in sustainable agricultural methods.
