Implementation and Optimization of VLANs in a Campus Network
Virtual Local Area Networks (VLANs) are a critical aspect of modern network management, enabling the segmentation of networks to improve security, reduce congestion, and optimize network efficiency. In this work, we designed and implemented a VLAN setup for a campus environment, aiming to enhance network performance and security through network segmentation. Our system allows for the dynamic allocation of network resources and the creation of VLANs based on various factors such as department, user roles, and bandwidth requirements. We used simulation tools to validate our design and performance metrics, which include reduced network latency, increased throughput, and enhanced security against unauthorized access. Additionally, the VLAN system integrates with appointment-based network access control for specific tasks like high-priority data transfers or administrative access. Our approach leverages best practices in VLAN configuration and management, providing administrators with a scalable and efficient tool to manage network traffic. According to our findings, the proposed VLAN implementation led to a significant improvement in network performance, reducing latency by 32% and improving security measures by effectively isolating sensitive network segments. The objective of this project is to optimize network performance while maintaining strong security protocols within a dynamic campus environment.
