“Novias de la Unión Tepito”: A Symbolic Configuration of a Criminalizing Typology
Based on the principles of the concept of criminal subjugation, the author of this article analyzes the socio-symbolic process whereby the label “Novias de la Unión Tepito” was created as a criminalizing social typology. He deals empirically with the genealogy, the narrative structure, the sedimentation, and the broadening of this category in Mexico, identifying the way in which public opinion crystalized as a narrative reference point under which many women and some feminicide and disappearance victims have been incrimi-nated. Analytically speaking, he offers a comprehensive framework that, dis-tancing itself from notions like stigma or secondary deviation, allows one to understand how different intersubjective social typologies that personify crime are produced, as well as the intersectional symbolic field that makes it possible to structure criminalized subjectivities, especially of women.KEY WORDS: Novias de la Unión Tepito, criminal subjection, femicidal violence, gender-based criminalization, criminalizing typologization.
