Analysis of Four-Story Factory Building Using Special Moment Resisting Frame System (SMRF) With and Without Prestressed Post-Tension (PT) One-Way Slab and Beam

This study investigates the impact of applying Post-Tensioning (PT) on beams and slabs in a four-story factory building. This building with spans ranging from 9-12 m, was initially designed conventionally with Special Moment Resisting Frames (SMRF) for seismic force resistance. The building was then redesigned under two different conditions. In the first condition is PT one-way slab and beam combined with SMRF perimeter frame. In the second condition, additional to the PT one-way slab, shear wall is added with SMRF resulting in a dual lateral resisting system. The structures were then subjected to spectral response earthquake loads, after which their responses were analyzed. This included evaluating the volume of concrete, reinforcement, formwork, and tendons to determine the optimal cost. Both redesigned models demonstrated varying degrees of improvement in structural response, including reductions in story shear and drift. Additionally, the first and second models achieved cost reductions of 13.77% and 13.51%, respectively. Comparison among the three models studied in this research, the most cost-effective design is for the case PT one-way slab with SMRF.
