Molecular phylogenetics of Thor Kingsley, 1878 and Thinora Bruce, 1997 (Decapoda: Caridea: Thoridae), with the relegation of Thinora to synonymy and the description of two new species of Thor, one cryptic
Abstract The genera Thor Kingsley, 1878 and Thinora Bruce, 1997 comprises small-sized thorid shrimps (family Thoridae Kingsley, 1878) distributed in tropical and subtropical waters worldwide. Despite previous research focusing on their sexual systems, sexual dimorphism, and biogeography, there has been a notable absence of phylogenetic studies focusing on the two genera. Freshly collected specimens deposited in the collections of MNHN (Muséum national d’Histoire naturelle, Paris) and FLMNH (Florida Museum of National History, Florida) enabled us to conduct a phylogenetic analysis that includes representatives from both genera. A set of molecular phylogenetic and species delimitation analyses coupled with detailed studies on the morphology of these shrimps revealed the presence of two new species within Thor, one of which is a cryptic species. The two new species are described. The phylogenetic analysis further suggests that the monotypic genus Thinora should be synonymized with Thor. Accordingly, we have transferred Thinora maldivensis (Borradaile, 1915) to Thor in accordance with its original designation.
