HARMONIZATION OF THE URBAN ENVIRONMENT IN RESIDENTIAL AREAS: CHALLENGES AND PROSPECTS

Harmonization of the urban environment in residential areas is a strategic task of modern urban planning that requires an integrated systematic approach. Lviv, as a city with an established historical structure, demonstrates a complex of specific challenges in the transformation process of residential environments. A representative example is the residential area along Hrynchenka Street, formed in the 1970–1990s, which includes diverse building typologies – 12–14-story brick buildings, 9-story panel buildings, and 5-story apartment buildings. The current state of the district is characterized by fragmented spatial changes: uncontrolled transformation of public spaces, spontaneous parking, and chaotic placement of commercial objects without considering the holistic spatial organization. This study examines methodological approaches to harmonizing such districts, based on the analysis of global practices and identification of effective means to overcome the identified problems. A systematic review of current urban studies has been conducted, defining strategic principles for creating a harmonious urban environment, in particular: integration of natural elements, balanced functional zoning, and creation of barrier-free space. Special attention is given to the analysis of international case studies – Hammarby Sjöstad (Stockholm), Greenwich Peninsula (London), and Nordhavn (Copenhagen), which demonstrate effective strategies for transforming residential areas. Based on the conducted analysis, comprehensive recommendations for renewing the residential environment have been proposed, using Hrynchenka Street as an example, including: formation of multifunctional spaces, modernization of pedestrian infrastructure, integration of ecological solutions, and implementation of contemporary urban practices to ensure high quality urban space.
