Architectural typology of Iranian schools based on energy efficiency in the Islamic period

This study explores the architectural typology of traditional Iranian schools during the Islamic period, focusing on their energy-efficient characteristics. It examines the evolution of educational spaces, from early learning environments where moudares (classrooms) were integrated within residential buildings to the establishment of independent educational institutions such as mosque schools and madrasas. Special attention is given to the impact of climatic conditions on the spatial organization of schools across different regions of Iran, including plains, mountainous areas, and coastal zones of the Caspian Sea and the Persian Gulf. The study analyzes key architectural elements such as central courtyards, student living quarters (hodjrehs, ḥujra), covered prayer halls (shabestans), wind towers (badgirs), and the use of local construction materials that contributed to reducing energy consumption and maintaining a comfortable microclimate. The findings demonstrate that traditional educational institutions in Iran evolved following climate-responsive architectural principles, allowing them to efficiently utilize natural resources for ventilation, lighting, and thermal regulation. The research highlights valuable insights for integrating traditional architectural strategies into contemporary energy-efficient educational space design by examining the typological solutions implemented in these historical schools. This study underscores the sustainability principles inherent in traditional Iranian schools, showcasing how their architectural form, spatial layout, and material selection responded to environmental challenges. By drawing connections between historical building techniques and modern sustainability requirements, this research presents a framework for revitalizing energy-efficient strategies in contemporary school architecture.
