Androgenic effect of Makaradhwaja rasa in late-onset hypogonadism

Age-related hypogonadism, also known as late-onset hypogonadism (LOH), is a clinically and biochemically defined disease of older men with serum testosterone levels below the reference parameters of younger healthy men and with symptoms of testosterone deficiency, manifested by adverse effects on numerous organ systems and severe disturbances of the quality of life. Testosterone replacement therapy is the main line of treatment in contemporary medicine to maintain the physiological hormone levels. Still, in aged males, it may produce serious side effects such as coronary artery disease, benign prostatomegaly, and prostate cancer. From an Ayurveda perspective, the symptoms of LOH can be correlated with Shukrakshaya (~diminution of semen) . This case report documents the androgenic effect of the Makaradhwaja rasa in a 38-year-old male with complaints of erectile dysfunction, lack of enthusiasm towards work, and generalized weakness. After clinical and biochemical assessment, he was diagnosed with LOH and prescribed Makaradhwaja rasa for 12 weeks. After 12 weeks of administration, the patient showed a significant improvement in the androgen levels with improvement in symptoms as well. This case study provides evidence that Makaradhwaja rasa significantly enhances androgen levels in patients with LOH.

From an Ayurveda perspective, the symptoms of LOH can be correlated with Shukrakshaya (~diminution of semen) . This case study provides evidence that Makaradhwaja rasa significantly enhances androgen levels in patients with LOH.
