The Insula and Psychiatry: A Hidden Target for Neurostimulation
The insula as an anatomical structure has been gaining importance in psychiatry, and there have been many studies that have implicated the insula in key neurobiological circuits in depression and schizophrenia. The insula is now being studied with advances in neuroimaging and emerging as a target for neuromodulation and neurostimulation procedures. This article gives an overview of the anatomy of the insula and its emerging role as a target for neurostimulation.
