Improvement of the Hass Avocado Selection Process for Export by Means of Artificial Intelligence and an Automated Mechanical System

The research addresses the challenges and opportunities in the production and grading of Hass avocados, highlighting problems of errors and long times in the manual process. Industrial engineering tools, such as operations and process analysis diagrams, the Pareto diagram and the flow chart, are proposed to identify areas for improvement. In addition, the use of YOLOv8, a computer vision tool, is introduced to automate and improve sorting accuracy. This solution, which combines vision sensors on drones and automated sorting machines, optimizes the process, reducing the time to 56 seconds, which represents a 47.98% improvement over the manual method. With an implementation cost of $6,156.72, it is presented as an efficient, accurate and sustainable alternative to increase productivity and competitiveness in the agricultural industry.
