Women in Rhodora, 1899–2023
This paper celebrates the contributions of women botanists to the journal Rhodora throughout its first 124 years of publication. Although women were not admitted to membership in the New England Botanical Society (then Club) until 1964, women published botanical notes, observations, and technical studies starting in Volume 1 (1899). The contributions of women remained low, at less than 10% of the papers published in each decade, until the 1980s, reflecting the proportion of women in botanical science. Over this 124-year span, 759 articles (11% of the total) were published by 499 women as both single and multiauthored articles. This paper presents an analysis by decade and brief biographical sketches of notable contributors.
