Enneagram-based Art Therapy for the Psychological Growth of Single Mothers: A Single-Case Study of Enneagram Type 4
This study explores the effectiveness of Enneagram-based art therapy in fostering the psychological growth of single mothers with Enneagram Type 4 traits. Single mothers often face multiple challenges such as unemployment, financial struggles, gender inequality, and emotional stress which can lead to distress including depression, anxiety, and helplessness. Type 4 individuals especially exhibit emotional extremes and internal conflicts, requiring more psychological support. This study analyzed the effects of a 10-week Enneagram-based art therapy program on a single mother conducted from June to August 2024. First, pre-assessments and interviews identified key psychological issues, followed by a tailored therapy program. The study also qualitatively analyzed each session’s art activities and expressions. The results showed that the participant recognized and explored her inner conflicts, having positive changes. In the self-observation stage, she became aware of her self-image and internal struggles. In the self-understanding stage, she worked to accept past experiences and emotions while seeking a clearer life direction. Finally, in the self-transformation stage, she pursued positive change and a hopeful vision for the future more proactively. This study suggests that Enneagram-based art therapy can effectively alleviate single mothers’ emotional issues and support their emotional well-being. It also highlights the potential for further research involving other Enneagram types and psychological support programs. The findings contribute to expanding the application of Enneagram-based art therapy in psychotherapy and counseling.
