High-performance planar UWB antenna with band-notch filtering and optimized bit data rate

Abstract A novel planar microstrip line feed UWB antenna design with capabilities of band rejections and adequate BDR is presented. The structure employed rectangular patch antenna, microstrip line feed and partial defected ground. An inverse L-slit and an inverse U-slot on to the upper part of the structure are employed to eliminate WiMAX and WLAN bands. The proposed structure was realized using FR-4 substrate (1.6 mm) having dimensions 30× 28 mm 2 (0.251 λ L × 0.234 λ L in terms of wavelength calculated by utilizing lower cutoff frequency (f L ) governing the absolute bandwidth). The absolute bandwidth of 10.59 GHz (2.51 to 13.10 GHz), fractional bandwidth of 135.68% and BDR of 2310 was obtained for the design which is very similar to existing structures in reported literature. Design provides band-notches between 3.04 and 3.95 GHz for WiMAX band rejection and between 5.14 and 5.81 GHz for WLAN band rejection. It is giving peak realized gain of 4.95 dBi and −2.74 dBi in terms of pass-band and stop-band respectively as well as maximum radiation efficiency of ∼89%. The structure has good time-based performance properties. The experimental results were found in close concurrence with the simulated results.
