Agricultural Limestone Market in Capanema/Pará: Strategies to Increase Supply and Demand

Objective: The objective of this study is to investigate the agricultural limestone trade in the Capanema/Pará region, focusing on strategies to increase both supply and demand, while analyzing the potential use of limestone extracted for cement production as a soil acidity corrective. Theoretical Framework: The research is based on the possibility of directing part of the limestone production intended for cement manufacturing toward agricultural purposes as well, in order to meet the local market demand. Method: The methodology adopted was the SWOT analysis (Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, and Threats), through which both the external and internal environments were assessed using a matrix. Data collection was carried out through questionnaires directed at agricultural supply stores, an interview with the cement company, and chemical analysis of the limestone. Results and Discussion: The results confirmed that in Capanema, an important alternative would be to make the limestone used by cement factories also available for sale as agricultural limestone, as it complies with legal standards for use as calcitic agricultural limestone, effectively correcting soil acidity. Research Implications: The suggestion involves the development of two action plans. The first, a short-term plan, establishes educational initiatives targeting agricultural supply stores and producers. The second, a medium- and long-term plan, focuses on public policies related to limestone mining companies. Originality/Value: The research stands out by discussing the technical and socioeconomic implications of using limestone intended for cement production also for soil correction purposes. Its relevance is highlighted by the potential for increased supply and demand of limestone at a lower cost, directly impacting sustainable regional development.
