Design of a Mechanical Ventilation System Using Quick Return Motion Mechanism

The novel coronavirus disease has exposed critical supply shortages of various medical equipments in the medical field. This is the fact that many of the critically ill patients have required mechanical ventilation system as the part of their treatment. In this paper an artificial manual breathing unit bag (AMBU bag) based mechanical ventilator is designed to fulfil the void left by the scarcity of traditional ventilators during the pandemic situation. AQuicI^ Return Motion Mechanism is used as the driving mechanism of this ventilation system. In this study, modifications of mechanical ventilator are made so that tidal volume, inhalation-exhalation ratio and breathing rates could be regulated and controlled as per a patient's clinical requirements. The ventilator is designed using CAD modelling software. The power needed to drive the system assembly is also calculated. Although the results shown are not completely full proof, this kind of ventilator can be operated on patients under external supervision.
