Developing a circular regeneration toolbox for the public space of old residential area
The ongoing urban regeneration processes have led to substantial amounts of construction demolition and decoration waste (CDDW). Given the large volume of material flow and its significant environmental impact, it is crucial to rethink the sustainability-oriented construction to urban regeneration. This study aims to develop a circular regeneration toolbox specifically for the public spaces of old residential areas, encompassing an analysis of the circular potential of various building materials and methods for circular regeneration. Using the public space and public life (PSPL) survey method, the study identified residents' expectations for regeneration and the challenges of public spaces. The results revealed that residents place the highest priority on public environment management, the replacement and renewal of outdated facilities, and the addition of parking spaces. Among the eight case communities surveyed, the most serious problems in public space include: walking and vehicle organization (100.00 %), low-quality public spaces (87.50 %), and a lack of adequate public space (75.00 %). The circular regeneration framework was developed by integrating residents’ expectations with solutions to these spatial issues. This study contributes to the broader field of circular regeneration by offering a decision-making framework that supports circular economy theory in public space regeneration. • A circular regeneration toolbox for public space of old residential area is constructed. • Problems of public space were defined through public space and public life survey method. • Framework for applying circular materials to public space regeneration developed. • The circular construction has greater sustainable benefits in public space regeneration than linear construction. • The circular construction network presents the key points of collaborative recycling network.
