Nanogels synthesized from Iron and steel slags via sol-gel technique: A promising avenue for CO2 sequestration and sustainable industrial practices

This study explores the innovative use of iron and steel slags for carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) sequestration through the synthesis of nanogels via the sol-gel technique, marking a significant advancement in environmental solutions. Iron and steel slags, commonly viewed as industrial by-products, possess high calcium and magnesium oxide content, making them highly effective for CO 2 sequestration. Recent advancements have enhanced their CO 2 absorption, achieving rates of up to 100 kg per ton of slag. These improvements include mechanical activation to increase surface area and chemical treatments to boost reactivity. Furthermore, cutting-edge techniques like microfluidics and nanostructuring within the sol-gel process have allowed precise control of particle size and nanogel morphology, leading to faster carbonation rates and greater stability of CO 2 encapsulation. The result is enhanced carbonation kinetics and improved physical durability, which are essential for practical application. The broader impact of this research is considerable, offering a scalable, cost-effective solution for industrial CO 2 sequestration. This method not only helps reduce the carbon footprint of steel production but also supports global initiatives to mitigate greenhouse gas emissions. By converting industrial waste into a valuable resource for environmental protection, this technology promotes sustainable industrial practices and provides a promising avenue to combat climate change.
